Case Study (1) 'Open Fire Re-lining'

Property Description

Large 18th Century manor house in Hornsea on the East coast

Problem

The property owner called us due to smoke a fumes leaking the bedroom above where the fireplace was located. The fireplace had a 16’’ open fire grate which the owner burnt bitumen coal and wood on. The chimney was unlined and constructed out of bricks, after years of use the parging and lime mortar holding the bricks together had become loose causing the chimney to leak. This is a very common problem with unlined chimneys, once the bricks and mortar start to deteariate on the inside of the chimney the only solution is to reline the complete chimney.

Solution

Due to the age of the property and the condition of the brickwork the best solution was to reline the chimney using class 1 Thermocrete. The Thermocrete system added strength and insulation and made the chimney safe for generations to come.

Methodology

The Thermocrete liner was installed in one day with very little disruption to the home owner, we inflated the Thermocrete flue former to 200mm diameter to ensure the fire work perfectly and leaving the chimney in better condition than when it was first built.
